The combination of high rainfall, dramatic mountainous terrain, and deep fiords makes New Zealand home to some of the world's most spectacular waterfalls.
- Sutherland Falls (Fiordland): New Zealand’s most famous and highest waterfall (580m). Best viewed via a multi-day hike on the Milford Track, or spectacularly from the air on a scenic flight.
- Browne Falls (Fiordland): Often cited as potentially the highest in the country (over 800m), this cascade plunges into Doubtful Sound. Best seen from a boat cruise.
- Huka Falls (Taupō): A huge volume of water from the Waikato River is forced through a narrow gorge, creating a powerful, mesmerizing blue torrent. Easily accessible via a short walk.
- Devil’s Punchbowl Falls (Arthur's Pass): A breathtaking 131m drop, accessible via an easy track in Arthur's Pass National Park.
- Waireinga / Bridal Veil Falls (Waikato): A beautiful 55m curtain of water plunging into a deep pool. The viewing platform offers stunning photographic opportunities.
