Lace up your boots! New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) maintains thousands of kilometres of world-class trails. While the Great Walks are incredible multi-day journeys, these ten options offer the most spectacular scenery achievable in a single day.
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing (North Island): A demanding 19.4 km trek across lunar landscapes, emerald lakes, and steaming vents. Requires good fitness and planning.
- Hooker Valley Track (South Island): An accessible 10 km return walk near Aoraki/Mt Cook, ending at a glacial lake dotted with icebergs.
- Abel Tasman Coast Track (South Island): Choose any section for golden sands, crystal-clear water, and native bush. A water taxi can drop you off for a half-day or full-day walk.
- Roy’s Peak Track (South Island): Near Wānaka. Famous for its epic views over Lake Wānaka and the surrounding peaks. Be prepared for a steep climb.
- Pūtea (Mount Taranaki) Summit Track (North Island): A challenging climb rewarded with views of the perfectly conical volcano.
- Blue Pools Track (South Island): An easy, short walk through native Matai and Podocarp forest to see stunningly clear, blue glacial pools.
- Key Summit Track (South Island): Part of the Routeburn Track, offering incredible alpine vistas over Fiordland.
- Waiheke Island Headland Walks (North Island): Combine coastal views with vineyard stops.
- Fossil Creek Loop Track (North Island): A unique, easy walk that includes hot water streams and glow worm viewing at night.
- Devil’s Punchbowl Falls Track (South Island): A short, rewarding walk in Arthur's Pass National Park to a spectacular 131m waterfall.
