Lace up your boots! New Zealand’s Department of Conservation (DOC) maintains thousands of kilometres of world-class trails. While the Great Walks are incredible multi-day journeys, these ten options offer the most spectacular scenery achievable in a single day. If you're planning an adventure to New Zealand, make sure to add these 10 day hikes to your bucket list!

1. Rob Roy Glacier Track, Mount Aspiring National Park

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 3-4 hours return

Elevation Gain: ~400m

Hidden in the Matukituki Valley near Wānaka, the Rob Roy Glacier Track is pure magic. The trail follows Rob Roy Stream through ancient beech forest before climbing to a spectacular view of the Rob Roy glacier. It's one of the most accessible glacier viewpoints in the country.

2. Roy's Peak Track, Wanaka

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Duration: 5-6 hours return

Elevation Gain: ~1300m

Roy's Peak offers panoramic views of Lake Wanaka, Mount Aspiring, and the surrounding Southern Alps. The steady climb through open farmland is rewarded with a truly iconic vista.

3. Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Difficulty: Hard

Duration: 7-9 hours one way (shuttle required)

Elevation Gain: ~760m

Often praised as one of the best single-day hikes in the world, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing takes you through a dramatic volcanic landscape featuring active craters, emerald lakes, and steaming vents. It's an otherworldly experience.

4. Hooker Valley Track, Mount Cook National Park

Difficulty: Easy

Duration: 1-2 hours return

Elevation Gain: Minimal

This walk delivers incredible views with minimal effort. The well-formed track crosses three swing bridges and follows the glacial Hooker River to Hooker Lake, where icebergs float beneath the towering face of Aoraki/Mt Cook. The Sealy Tarns side-trip adds a challenging climb for those wanting more vertical, with even better views of the mountain. Note: As of late 2025, the track is temporarily closed beyond the second swing bridge due to flooding damage. Full reopening expected in Autumn 2026.

5. Blue Pools Track, Haast Pass

Difficulty: Easy

Duration: 1-1.5 hours return

Elevation Gain: Minimal

A short, accessible walk through beech forest brings you to a swing bridge overlooking the crystal-clear, glacier-fed Blue Pools. The water here is an almost unbelievable shade of blue, and is a great spot for a swim.

6. The Pinnacles, Coromandel

Difficulty: Hard

Duration: 6-8 hours return

Elevation Gain: ~750m

This challenging but rewarding hike takes you through lush native forest, past old kauri dams, and up to a lookout tower with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Coromandel Ranges and coastline. It's often done as an overnight trip to the Pinnacles Hut, but a fit hiker can complete it as a long day trip.

7. Ben Lomond Track, Queenstown

Difficulty: Hard

Duration: 6-8 hours return (from gondola top station)

Elevation Gain: ~1100m (from gondola top)

Starting from near the Skyline Gondola in Queenstown, this challenging climb offers panoramic views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, and the surrounding mountains.

8. Rocky Mountain Track, Wanaka

Difficulty: Moderate

Duration: 3 hours return

Elevation Gain: ~400m

A fantastic alternative to Roy's Peak if you're looking for something less crowded but still offering superb views. This track provides a steady climb to a rocky summit with panoramic views of Lake Wanaka, Diamond Lake, and the Southern Alps.

9. Mt Isthmus Track, Lake Hawea

Difficulty: Hard

Duration: 5-7 hours return

Elevation Gain: ~1000m

This lesser-known but equally rewarding hike offers spectacular views over both Lake Hawea and Lake Wanaka. It's a challenging climb, but the views from the ridgeline are truly breathtaking and offer a unique perspective of the region.

10. Lake Marian Track, Fiordland National Park

This track offers a taste of the rugged beauty of Fiordland. A challenging climb through dense forest and over tree roots leads to a stunning alpine lake, nestled in a cirque of towering peaks. On a calm day, the reflections are incredible.

Difficulty: Moderate to Hard

Duration: 3 hours return

Elevation Gain: ~400m

Honourable Mentions

Key Summit Track (Part of the Routeburn Track) - This Fiordland gem offers incredible views over three valleys without committing to the full multi-day great walk. The mosaic of tarns, tussock, and mountain views is quintessential New Zealand high country.

Devil's Punchbowl Falls Track (Arthur's Pass National Park) - A short, rewarding walk to a spectacular 131-metre waterfall. The track is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, making it perfect for breaking up the journey across the Southern Alps.

Planning Your Day Hike

Weather: New Zealand mountain weather changes rapidly. Check forecasts and be prepared to turn back if conditions deteriorate.

Equipment: Even on "easy" tracks, pack the essentials: water, snacks, warm layers, rain jacket, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.

Conservation: Respect the land that makes these experiences possible. Stick to marked tracks, carry out all rubbish, and be mindful of erosion on popular routes.
