Here’s the good news - if you’re headed to New Zealand, the options for stunning sunrises are endless too. Here are some of our top “pics”:

The Pinnacles, Coromandel

Pinnacles, Coromandel

The Coromandel ranges may be a long hike, but they are definitely worth it - especially if you’re into sunrise photography. The Pinnacles are about a 6-hour hike round trip, but if you want to see the sunrise, you’ll need to spend the night. Book ahead to stay at the Department of Conservation (Doc) hut, and then wake up early for stunning 360-degree views of the ranges and the sea.

'The Wanaka Tree', Central Otago

Lake Wanaka

Located just off the shore of Lake Wanaka is a tree that pokes its branches out of the water. Considered New Zealand’s most famous tree, Lake Wanaka offers “otherworldly” photo opportunities. With the tree in the foreground and the snow-capped mountains in the background, a Lake Wanaka sunrise will not disappoint.

Cape Reinga, Northland

Cape Reinga Lighthouse

If you head as far North as you can possibly go on the mainland, there you’ll find Cape Reinga. Though the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the area does offer panoramic views and stunning sunrises. Plus, the walk to the lighthouse is short and easy (10 minutes), so it’s perfect for people of any age (and it’s wheelchair accessible)

90 Mile Beach, Northland

Te Paki Sand Dunes

If you’re going to be in the Cape Reinga area, it’s well worth spending an extra night and checking out the sunrises at the Te Paki Sand Dunes on 90 Mile Beach. The collection of Dunes are just a short drive from Cape Reinga and offers over 10km of unlimited photo opportunities. Up for an adventure? Stay after sunrise and try some sandboarding!

Mt Manganui Summit, Bay Of Plenty

Mount Maunganui Summit

It may be a 45-minute hike up the mountain, but let us tell you - it’s well worth the extra effort. Standing 232 metres above sea level, Mount Maunganui Summit offers views as far as the eyes can see. Look down over the city as you admire the Pacific Ocean, the white sandy coastline, the harbour, and the million-dollar houses that sit down below. But the houses aren’t the only thing worth a million dollars - so is the sunrise view!

Summary:

There are so many inspiring photo opportunities throughout New Zealand, and sunrise is the perfect time to capture lasting memories. Try out some of the locations above, and then scout out some of your own too!
